Sehore district, a part of Bhopal division is a district of Madhya Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Sehore town. The district got its name from its headquarters town i.e. Sehore. Sehore was once known by the name ‘Siddhapur’. A rock-edict found in the Seevan River states that its name has been derived from ‘Sidrapur’. Legends believe that the term Sehore has been taken from the Hindi word "Sher" meaning Lion because there were number of lions in the nearby jungles of this place. The district of Sehore is associated with a long and glorious history. Some significant priests of Shaiva, Shakta, Jain, Vaishnav, Buddhists and Nath made it a seat of their deep meditation. Earlier, Sehore was a vital part of Awanti. During different periods of time the place was ruled by different rulers such as Magadh dynasty, Chandragupta Ist, Harshavardhan, Ashoka the great, Raja Bhoj, Peshwa chiefs, Rani Kamlawati and the Nawabs of Bhopal dynasty. Big and small rivers around the district of Sehore likewise Narmada, Parwati, Dudhi, Newaj, Kolar, Papnas, Kulans, Seewan, Lotia, and other rivers narrate the sad tale of their lost splendour in the form of some scattered idols of God and Goddess. Later, at the time of British rule, it was remained as the headquarters of the political agent. Natives of the Sehore played an important role during the period of Indian struggle for independence. After India got its independence in 1947, the Sehore district was emerged as a separate district in the map of Madhya Pradesh state in the year 1972. The place of Sehore is located in the foothills of Vindhyachal Range in the middle of Malwa region

Geographically, the district lies at 23°20'N latitude, 77°08'E longitude and 502 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 20.53% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 6,578 sq Km.. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 20th in the state and 154th in India. It is bounded by Rajgarh district, Bhopal district and Shajapur district on the North, Harda district on the South, Hoshangabad district on the South East, Raisen district on the East and Dewas district on the West and South West. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1098.0 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 8 tehsils namely Sehore, Ashta, Nasrullaganj, Ichhawar, Shyampur, Jawar, Budni and Rehti. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 4 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 8 towns and 1,072 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 13,11,332 out of which 6,83,743 are males and 6,27,589 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 918 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 21.54% including 20.99% were males and 22.15% were females. The population density in the district is 199 persons per sq. Km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 29,385 out of which 15,316 were males and 14,069 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 7,006 out of which 4,252 were males and 2,754 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 88.73% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 97.22%.

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on agriculture. In order to earn livelihood most of the population in the district are engaged in agriculture. The chief agricultural products in the district are aonla, mango, spices, maize, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. The district is scantily industrialised but it has some prominent industries namely Vardhman Fabrics, Abhishekh Industries Ltd, Alfa Proteins Ltd, Malwa Concrete Udhyog Pvt Ltd., Kendriya Pooni Sanyantra, Tractor Training Centre, Milk Chilling Centre, Cooperative Cattle Feed Factory, Midland Industries and Infrastructure Ltd., etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent. In the year 2019-20 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 16,50,703 lakhs at current price and Rs. 9,29,756 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 15,35,939 lakh at current price and Rs. 8,43,766 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 1,02,616 at current price and Rs. 56,372 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district has a well name in terms of educational sector in the Madhya Pradesh state. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its reputed educational institutions are Post Graduate College, R.A.K Agri Sehore College, Government Girls College, Satya Sai Engineering College, Government Engineering College of Ichhawar , Government Engineering College of Nashrullahganj, Government Engineering College of Ashta, Government Women Polytechnic College, ITI Sehore, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 70.06% including 80.83% are males and 58.33% are females.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, a distinguished Indian politician and current Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh was born on 5th March, 1959 at Budhni in the district. He is one of the great leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures numerous travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Ganesh Mandir popularly known as the Sidhha Ganesha Mandir is located in the Gopalpur village in the North-West direction of the district. Legends believe that the temple was constructed by Vikramaditya of Ujjain and after sometime it was renovated by the Maratha Peshwa, Baji Rao I. Hanuman Phatak, a beautiful temple devoted to Lord Hanuman is situated on the bank of Seewan River in the district. People from far off places come to this temple during the period of Navratri festival. Ramlala Mandir of great historical and archaeological importance is located 1 Km. away from the Sehore town. This temple is revered amongst eighty-four Hindu monasteries of India. Salkanpur Durga Temple situated on an eight hundred feet high hillock in the Salkanpur village in the district is dedicated to Goddess Durga. Every year a large number of followers and local people come to this temple to offer their prayers. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Saru-Maru Caves, Jama Masjid, Cenotaphs of Kunwar Chain Singh, etc.
