About Rajkot District (Gujarat)

Rajkot district is the district of Gujarat state with its administrative headquarters located at Rajkot city. Rajkot district is the third most advanced district in Gujarat. The term Rajkot generally means the city of princess and it was probably named after Raju Sandhi, the co-founder of the earlier princely state of Rajkot in 1610. The district also got its name from its administrative headquarters, Rajkot city. From the very beginning Rajkot was ruled by many significant rulers. The natives of the district also actively participated during the India’s struggle for independence. Rajkot was the abode of many great personalities like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Rajkot is one of the largest cities in India. Before merging in bilingual Bombay State on 1st November, 1956, Rajkot played a vital role as the capital of the then Saurashtra state from the period of 15th April, 1948 to 31st October, 1956. After separating from the bilingual Bombay state on 1st May, 1960 Rajkot was emerged as a distinct district in the map of Gujarat State.

Pankaj Udhas, a very famous ghazal singer was born on 17th May, 1951 at Jetpur in the Rajkot district. His numerous notable albums and live concerts made him a well admired figure at the global level. In 2006, the Government of India honoured him by the India's fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri for his remarkable contribution to the ghazal world.

Geographically, the district lies at 22°30'N latitude, 70°79'E longitude and 128 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 1.40% forest area of total geographical area. The district occupies a geographical area of 11,198 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 3rd in the state and 47th in India. It is surrounded by Morbi district on the north, Surendranagar and Botad districts on the east, Amreli and Junagadh districts on the south and Porbandar Jamnagar district on the west. The climate of the district remains mild throughout the year. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 988.2 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 14 talukas namely Maliya Miyana, Morbi, Wankaner, Tankara, Paddhari, Lodhika, Dhoraji, Rajkot, Jam Kandorna, Upleta, Jetpur, Kotda Sangani, Jasdan and Gondal. There are 7 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 23 towns and 835 villages. The administrative language in the district is Gujarati.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 38,04,558 including 19,74,445 are males and 18,30,113 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 927 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 20.02% including 20.25% were males and 19.78% were females. The population density in the district is 340 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 58,684 out of which 30,920 were males and 27,764 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 31,538 out of which 18,749 were males and 12,787 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in he district is Hindu with 89.30% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Gujarati with 96.41%.

All the heavy and small scale industries controlled by Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) and Gujarat State Financial Corporation (GSFC) contributes to its economy to a great extent. Some of its foremost industries are dying, printing, ginning, pressing industries, engineering and automobile works, textile, handicrafts, medicines, wall clocks. Ajanta Clocks, the world’s largest clock manufacturing company is situated in the district. Some of its population are also engaged in agriculture. The chief agricultural crops of the district are groundnut, cotton, sugarcane, etc. It is the largest producer of cotton and second largest producer of oil seeds, spices and onions in the Gujarat state.

The district has many schools and colleges. Alfred High School is a well known school which provided early education to Gandhiji. Saurashtra University is a reputed university in the district and most of its colleges are affiliated to it. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 80.96% including 87.07% are males and 74.43% are females.

Savjibhai Korat, an Indian politician and a cabinet minister with the portfolio of Road and Building under the government of Gujarat state was born on 6th August, 1953 at Juni Sankli in the Rajkot district. He was a member of Bharatya Janata Party. Vitthalbhai Hansrajbhai Radadiya, a distinguished Indian politician and a member of the 15th Lok Sabha was born on 8th November, 1958 (age 56) at Dolidar in the Rajkot district. He is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party political party.

Rajkot is the jewel of the Gujarat and it offers a huge variety of tourist places which allures many travellers from different parts of the world. Ram Krishna Ashram illustrates the life of Ramakrishna and propagates the universal teachings of Vedanta. The basic aim of the Ashram is to promote universal brotherhood and religious harmony. Watson Museum, established in 1888 is located in the Jubilee Gardens. The Museum is full of many antique things and it is named after Colonel James Watson. The Rajkot Race Course, situated at the centre of the city comprises huge grounds with large open spaces. It has an indoor stadium of Olympic standard, a cricket ground to play international matches and grounds for football, hockey as well as volleyball. The Rashtriya Shala, located in the Rajkot district has a lot of things of unique things related to the history of India. The Ishwariya Temple is the centre of attraction of the Rajkot district. Another important temple in the district is Jagat Mandir. The Kaba Gandhi No Delo of Rajkot is actually the house where the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, spent his childhood days. People from far distance place come to Kaba Gandhi No Delo to experience the life of Gandhiji.
