About Anand District (Gujarat)

Anand district is a district of Gujarat state with its administrative headquarters located at Anand town. The Kheda district was formed on 1st August, 1949 and at that time Anand as a taluka was the part of the Kheda district. But after sometime Anand was carved out of the Kheda district and emerged as a separate district in the map of Gujarat on 2nd October, 1997. Anand district is popularly known as 'Charotar' meaning a pot filled with gold coins. Moreover, the district produces highest amount of tobacco in the western Indian state of Gujarat. Since the soil of the district is very fertile therefore it is also called as ‘the Golden Leaf'. Anand is famous as the Milk Capital of India.

Hirubhai Mulljibhai Patel, a remarkable Indian civil servant who played a major role in the issues related to internal and national security was born in 1903 at Dharmaj town in the district. He served as the Finance Minister from 1977 to 1980 and later served as the Home Minister of India.

Geographically, the district lies at 22°56'N latitude, 72°95'E longitude and 39 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 1.06% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses geographical area of 3,204 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 19th in the state and 373rd in India. It is bounded by  Kheda district on the north, Vadodara district on the east, Ahmedabad district on the west and the Gulf of Khambhat on the south. The climate of the district remains extremely hot during the summer. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 928.2 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into eight talukas namely Anand, Anklav, Borsad, Khambhat, Petlad, Sojitra, Tarapur, and Umreth. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 7 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 15 towns and 347 villages. The administrative language in the district is Gujarati.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 20,92,745 out of which 10,87,224 are males and 10,05,521 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 925 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 12.70% including 11.85% were males and 13.63% were females. The population density in the district is 653 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 35,726 out of which 18,767 were males and 16,958 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 20,211 out of which 12,084 were males and 8,125 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 85.95% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Gujarati with 96.67%.

The economy of the district is solely based on two sectors namely Anand Milk-producers Union Limited (AMUL) and agriculture. The industries of the district were also well developed. Some of its prominent industries include Hindustan Packaging Company Ltd., National Dairy Development Board, Cambay Chemicals Ltd., Beepee Coating Ltd., Elecon Engineering Company Ltd., Mother Dairy Food Processing Ltd, etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent. Most of the population in the district are as well engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The main agricultural products in the district are tobacco, rice, wheat, millet, banana, green vegetables. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the farmers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items.

Pramukhswami Medical College is one of the renowned medical colleges of the district. There are two most recognised universities in the district are Anand Agricultural University and Sardar Patel University. Some other reputed educational institutions in the district are S M Patel College of Home Science, B J Vanijya Mahavidyalaya, Anand Arts College, Anand Institute of Social Work, J. M. Patel Arts College, P. M. Patel Institute of Integrated Biotechnology, Sardar Patel Commerce College, BRD School of Biosciences, Ipcowala Santram College of Fine Arts, C. P. Patel and F. H. Shah Commerce College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 84.37% including 91.82% are males and 76.36% are females.

Bharatsinh Madhavsinh Solanki, an illustrious Indian politician and the Union Minister of State of Power from June, 2009 to January, 2011 was born on 26th November, 1953 at Borsad in the district. He has also served as the Minister of State for Railways from January 2011 to October 2012. He is a member of the Indian National Congress political party.

The district has numerous centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. The Flo-Art Gallery, an extraordinary collection of cottage industry handicrafts and other marvellous artifacts of household purposes which enclose an area of nearly 1000 sq m. Amul Dairy Cooperative Museum is one of the perfect destinations for the visitors. The museum is full of photographs which depict the journey of development of the museum from the time of its birth till its current state. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Veer Vithalbai Patel Memorial, located in Karamsad are consists of a magnificent garden and a library. Swaminarayan Mandir, six storeys temple has the idols of Narayan Lakshmi and Harikrishna Maharaj, which are based in the first shrine of this temple. Some other places of interest in the district are Khapra Zaveri Palace, Ranchhodri Dakor Temple, Stambhan Parshvanath Jinalaya, etc.
